If you want to treasure your sketchbook for years, splash out on a more expensive journal. Spiral notebooks lay flat, giving you easy access to the page. Some will be cheaper with cardboard covers while others are hardbound and premium. Does it feel hardwearing? Are the pages sewn in, and do they lay flat? Is it better suited to watercolor paints, pencils, or markers?Īs well as the paper quality, it’s a good idea to look at the construction of the sketchbook itself. Here are a few questions you’ll need answers to if you want to buy the best sketchbook: That brings up to how the paper will perform in use. You can get high-quality thinner paper – but you’ll need to use more care with it! How it Performs With Watercolor Paints That doesn’t mean that light paper is of low quality. ![]() Light paper is more likely to ripple or tear if you use a lot of water. You’ll also get fewer pages in your sketchbook overall. In a sketchbook, that’s an important thing to think about! You don’t want your other designs to get blurred or destroyed.īut very heavy paper can be unwieldy and make your sketchbook weighty. Thicker paper will absorb more water without it seeping through to the other pages. Paper WeightĪnother critical factor is the weight of the paper. Top-quality artists’ paper will be acid-free and last a long time without your paint fading.īut it’s also more expensive and might not be necessary for your sketchbook. Watercolor paper comes in two main types – students’ or artists’ quality. It can feel very granulated and bumpy, or it can be almost shiny and slippery. Watercolor paper can vary from smooth to rough. I seem to lose control of how the colour mixes or spreads in large areas. The feel of the paper is a significant factor to consider. How do you do it so effortlessly? I’ve watched many of your videos and I can’t seem to get it. If I use a single colour, the outcome is better (still blotches) but not as unnatural as a mixture of colors. I’ve also tried on the stillman and birn beta series which is even worst as this book can’t take layers of water. I’m using the global arts sketchbook and Daniel smith paints. I’m trying to mix a few colors, for example in order from top to bottom new gamboge, perylene red and Payne’s grey for a sky. When I do directly on paper, I find that there are blotches and the paint is not cohesive. When doing wet on wet, I find the paper gets too wet and the paint is diluted too much and the paint when on paper looks grainy. I’ve tried wet on wet or directly on the paper. but each time I do the background, it looks blotchy and not integrated. I’m not sure whether it’s the paper, or the paint or the technique, probably the latter. I like how the colours turn out on the paper.Ĭan you please do a video on how to paint sky backgrounds. The paper absorbs water well enough but I do not recommend heavy washes because this is after all not 100% cotton. The sketchbook opens to quite wide and it will have an even wider format with the Pocket Panorama size.Ģ00GSM isn't exactly thick so there's definitely some warping when you apply lots of water. I'm used Daniel Smith watercolour paints for all these sketches. Granulating pigments work well with the paper. The white paper will make colours more striking. The coldpress paper has a slight texture that works well with watercolour. The pages are white as compared to their hand-book sketchbooks which is off-white creamy. The travelogue watercolour sketchbook comes in five sizes: Right at the back cover is a plastic pocket that you can use to put stuff like namecards, paper, etc. I like that both surface are almost of similar texture which this means you can get consistent results for your washes when drawing across pages. There's no mention of the cotton content. Inside, there are 60 pages of white, acid-free, 200GSM coldpress watercolour paper. Mine had some stray strands coming out already, similar to my experience with the Hand-book sketchbook. ![]() The clothed rubber band holding the covers together is not very durable. HONDULA: A cooler city would be a much safer one - a much more protective one against adverse impacts from this type of event.ĭAVIS-YOUNG: Climate change is making heat waves more intense and more frequent, and Phoenix's population is still growing. That's why he wants Phoenix to plant more shade trees and increase the use of cool-roof technology. HONDULA: We're talking about slivers of a fraction of a percent of possibility.ĭAVIS-YOUNG: Still, Hondula says the study serves as a reminder that lowering temperatures even a few degrees could save lives. ![]() But Hondula doesn't expect Phoenix will see a deadly power outage anytime soon. According to the study, extreme weather and natural disasters nationwide are making blackouts more common than they used to be. ![]() Nearly 13,000 would die.ĭAVID HONDULA: In hot cities, air conditioning is a critical lifeline.ĭAVIS-YOUNG: David Hondula directs Phoenix's Office of Heat Response and Mitigation, and he was among the study's co-authors. A recent study in the journal Environmental Science & Technology found, in that worst-case scenario, nearly half the city's population would need emergency care. They're also investing in battery storage that could keep homes powered if other sources were disrupted because, if Phoenix did experience a power outage during this heat, the results could be catastrophic. SYRJALA: No one resource really solves the whole energy need, so you have to make sure that you have the right mix of resources in your portfolio to ensure reliability.ĭAVIS-YOUNG: That's why, Syrjala says, SRP continues to look for ways to add backup power to that mix, like the new turbines at the Agua Fria plant. To meet growing demand, power companies say they're relying on a mix of sources, from renewables to natural gas. The metro-area population has also more than doubled in 30 years. She says it's not just that summers are getting hotter. PAM SYRJALA: Air conditioning is probably one of our single largest loads.ĭAVIS-YOUNG: Pam Syrjala is with SRP. SRP and Phoenix's other utility, APS, have both reported the highest power use ever. Daytime temperatures have hit 119, and overnight lows have hovered in the 90s. This is the longest heat wave in Phoenix history. But we use these to smooth out the grid.ĭAVIS-YOUNG: That's crucial, especially this summer. It could be a monsoon that came in and wiped out a bunch of transmission lines. Ellis says that helps SRP be better prepared for disruptions.ĮLLIS: We get a lot of fluctuations from maybe another power plant trip. Ellis says those can start generating enough power for 22,000 homes in under 10 minutes. So this year, SRP installed two new turbines at this plant. And you have to make sure it's evenly warmed before you actually put it online.ĭAVIS-YOUNG: SRP can predict when they'll need extra power, but they can't always plan hours ahead. And while they still work, they take 12 to 14 hours to power up.īOB ELLIS: You've got a big hunk of steel - that steam turbine - and you have to warm that up. ![]() The oldest turbines have been here since the late 1950s. This is where SRP turns for additional power when the system sees peak demand. KATHERINE DAVIS-YOUNG, BYLINE: For one Phoenix-area utility, Salt River Project, more than three weeks of temperatures above 110 have meant turning on extra natural gas turbines.ĭAVIS-YOUNG: Bob Ellis is the plant director at SRP's Agua Fria Generating Station. Katherine Davis-Young from member station KJZZ visited a power station to see how utilities are keeping up. The country's fifth-largest city, Phoenix, is enduring its longest heat wave in recorded history, and that is driving record-breaking demand for electricity. ![]() ![]() Schick was fortunate not to give away a free kick for initially fouling De Ligt, but his persistence earned the set piece and also led to the Dutch being forced to play for more than half an hour without their best defender.
